The University

Stellenbosch University is home to an academic community of 29 000 students (including 4 000 foreign students from 100 countries) as well as 3 000 permanent staff members (including 1 000 academics) on five campuses. The historical oak-lined university town amongst the Boland Mountains in the winelands of the Western Cape creates a unique campus atmosphere, which attracts local and foreign students alike. The scenic beauty of the area; state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly facilities and technology, as well as visionary thinking about the creation of a sustainable 21st-century institution, makes for the unique character of Stellenbosch University.

The Coetzenburg Sports environment is formed out of a certain number of role players and facilities that offer a wide variety of services to high performance athletes. Below is a summary of what you can expect to find at Coetzenburg for your training, testing and recovery needs.

CAF Lab

Stellenbosch University recently established a new unit for Neuromechanics (also known as the Human Movement Analysis facility) within the Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) to support a wide range of human movement research in healthcare, engineering and sport.

Neuromechanics is an interdisciplinary field that integrates neuroscience and biomechanics to understand how the human nervous system and musculoskeletal system interact to control movements. Knowledge of how human movement is controlled and organized in different contexts play a critical role in efforts to improve the health and well-being of society in a number of fields.

Sports Physio Lab

The Sport Physiology Laboratory at Stellenbosch University recognises that we have a unique opportunity to make a significant contribution to certain sports. We provide an integrated service programme that combines state of the art physical assessment, individualised exercise prescription (in consultation with the coach), periodic performance reviews and re-assessments.

Through this integrated approach we can play an important role in developing and maximising the athletic potential of all athletes, eliminating the guesswork from their training and optimising their training time. For example, many athletes already train with heart rate monitors; however, this is only one step in the right direction. One has to establish specific heart rate training zones to really optimise one’s training and this is best done under controlled conditions in a laboratory.
